The Eton Mission Rowing Club was established in 1885 by old Etonians and has been based in a few different sites around Hackney Wick in East London before moving to the current boathouse in 1934.

The rowers used to get boated from under Wick Bridge and stored the boats at the St. Mary of Eton church.

The first Gilbert Johnstone boathouse was built on the Hackney Marsh side of the Hackney Cut and opened in May 1911, stood there for over 20 years before being relocated to the other side of the Hackney Cut.

In 1934 the existing Johnstone boathouse was built and opened on the Wick side of the Hackney Cut.

EMRC Johnstone Boathouse finished in 1934

    Building survived the WWII Blitz

Please note: The rowing club is currently not taking in any new members. As a direct result of the influx of powered craft and moorings, any river rowing has been suspended. ****NOTE**** The club is not considering to let any part of the property or the clubhouse. Trespass onto the club property! Though some may consider Hackney Wick a piss hole, the club would request people not to use the property as a toilet!

How to find us: Boathouse location

The club house is located on the Lea 'The Cut' canal in Hackney Wick between Carpenters Rd and Wick Rd Bridges at the end of Wallis Rd. The 2012 Olympics site is directly across from the boathouse and the main stadium is within a mile.
